Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing is a form of psychotherapy developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the 1990s. Originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR can often work much faster than other types of therapy and can be used to treat a variety of issues including (but not limited to):

  • anxiety

  • self esteem

  • pain management

  • changing unwanted behaviour (e.g. eating habits, smoking, kick-starting a fitness plan)

  • desensitising traumatic events

  • intrusive thoughts


In an EMDR session, the client recalls distressing images relating to traumatic events or fears. While the client holds onto this image and associated feelings, the therapist then guides them through their chosen method of BLS (bilateral stimulation - this can be eye movements, or tapping on the knees or palms of hands).
