"Reiki is love, love is wholeness, wholeness is balance, balance is well being, well being is freedom from disease." - Dr. Mikao Usui (Founder of Reiki).
“Reiki” (pronounced ‘ray-key’) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’ and a type of energy healing whereby a Reiki practitioner places the palms of their hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on (or near) the body to encourage emotional or physical healing. No massage or manipulation is involved and the client remains fully clothed for the session, which can take anything from thirty to ninety minutes, depending on the client’s needs.
It comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy) and was founded by Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui in 1922.
You may or may not feel sensations during a treatment, everyone is different and every treatment can differ. Some people may see colours or visions, which may or may not have an immediate meaning, some people may feel sensations such as tingling, some people may simply experience feelings of wellbeing and calm. In some cases, you may have an emotional response, which can signify the removal of blockages, allowing the restoration of harmony to take place in our body, mind and soul. Reiki is a safe and calming treatment that can be helpful to us at difficult times in our lives.
Reiki is said to improve overall emotional and physical wellbeing and is also used within the NHS to treat patients as a complementary therapy for physical illnesses, to aid the healing process (please note - Reiki is not a substitute for medication and conventional therapies). However, you do not have to be suffering from any kind of illness to benefit from a Reiki session.
Long distance Reiki healing is also possible, and may be beneficial as part of your wellbeing journey in between face to face sessions. Reiki energy connects on our spiritual and energetic levels and distance sessions work because energy is not limited by distance. Distance is a physical limitation only.
